Paul Copsey Joins Martin Guy Developments

Martin Guy Developments, a rapidly expanding golf course maintenance contractor based in the South East of England, is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Copsey as Project Manager.

Paul will focus initially on the course maintenance side of the business to enhance the quality of delivery to the clubs & courses that are wholly maintained by MGD – currently a mix of traditional public course contracts such as Rickmansworth Public Golf Course, Bushey Golf & Country Club, Stevenage Golf Club, but also private member clubs such as Braintree Golf Club & West Essex Golf Club.

Paul has over 35 years’ experience in greenkeeping & golf course management, specialising in multi-site operations, previously as Group Courses Manager for Crown Golf & prior to this as Regional Course Manager with American Golf (UK) Ltd. He has also combined his group roles with the Course Manager positions at Pine Ridge & Hampton Court Palace Golf Clubs, plus Orpington Golf Centre. One of his recent achievements was the award of GEO Environmental Certification for South Essex Golf Club. Prior to these roles he had experience with both public & private member operated courses, as Course Manager of Barnehurst Golf Club & North Foreland Golf Club.

Martin Guy’s experience in the course maintenance & renovation business is not too dissimilar to Paul’s; both previously working together at American Golf (UK) Ltd. While Paul continued with Crown Golf, Martin took the bold step of forming his own company, quickly gaining an enviable client list based on working to the highest standards, exceeding the client’s expectations & keeping a firm control on costs. In addition to the golf course project & renovation clients, which include Woburn & Hanbury Manor, MGD also supplies ground maintenance & renovation to Hertsmere Leisure, other local authority sports grounds, cricket clubs & football clubs including Staines Town, Witham Town & Hoddesdon Town.

When working separately both Martin & Paul operated Preferred Supplier Agreements with Sherriff Amenity. Paul’s experience with Sherriff Amenity goes back to 2007 when an extensive tendering exercise was undertaken to consolidate the supply to the then 30 clubs in the Crown Golf portfolio. This partnership still continues to this day.

I would like to think that in many ways from our initial relationship we both learnt how to maximise their working partnership in terms of product delivery, product quality, geographic coverage, product value & importantly the providing of training & technical knowledge. I was fortunate, for example, to earn my BASIS qualification with the training program offered to Crown Golf from the company. I see many of the current Sherriff Amenity customers now taking advantage of our format all these years down the line, so it is perhaps no surprise that Martin also operates a preferred supplier agreement with them. In a way, I will see little change & this will very much help with my transition to a new role with a new company. This familiarity will be a real help.”

Part of Paul’s new role will be consolidating & maximising the relationship between MGD & Sherriff Amenity in terms of refining product choice & performance. However, the key goal is to be able to deliver the highest quality turf conditions for the clients & customers of MGD in a professional & cost effective manner.

2015 & beyond will be an exciting time for MGD & its relationship with Sherriff Amenity.
