With they’re continued success in the natural and artificial sportsturf sector, White Horse Contractors (Northern) are proud to announce their latest completed contract – North Durham Academy.
Following a highly competitive tendering process, the company were chosen by main contractor Carillion Building to redevelop the natural and artificial sports facilities, which have now officially been opened.
White Horse Contractors (Northern) were appointed to design and build a sporting facility which included a full size 3rd generation artificial pitch, a five-court MUGA and also included full drainage, fencing and floodlighting. The construction of two natural grass pitches and a long jump with polymeric running track completed the extensive works. All sporting facilities will be available for students as well as the local community.
“Our brief was simple – construct an all-weather 3G synthetic pitch to a high standard for full-size and five-a-side football use,” explained Jim Crabbe, White Horse Contractors (Northern) Contracts Director. “The surface chosen was a 60mm sand/rubber pile synthetic grass sports carpet and fully meets the FA’s Guide to Artificial Grass Pitches for Community Use.”
The play facilities are also available for the local community so the design was required to reflect the main activity which would be football and in particular five-a-side, which can be particularly high-wearing to the synthetic carpet. The school curriculum also included rugby to be played on the two new natural pitches with tennis and net ball on the MUGA’s.
Construction required to be phased to dove-tail with the various other contractors working programmes on a site that had some access issues. Project milestones set by the local authority were all met and hand over was achieved within a tight schedule on time.
